Make your grant application stand out.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story can make all the difference.

I began writing grants for the Harrisburg chapter of the World Affairs Council in 2011. That experience—sifting through thousands of rows in grants databases, compiling figures, weaving it all into a compelling narrative—helped prepare me for my successful run at college scholarships in 2014 & 2015, where I won nearly half a million dollars in third-party awards. It turns out that writing a grant and applying for a scholarship are not so different; fundamentally, you are selling a belief in self, pitching a story backed by both fact and emotion.

I continued writing grants throughout college, primarily as the student leader of the Women’s Engineering Institute on campus, and won nearly $50,000 to support WEI’s programming. Most recently, I wrote a successful $100,000 grant for Last Mile Education Fund. I’ve discovered that I enjoy grant-writing so much that I plan to eventually take it up full-time whenever I retire from tech.

On March 9, 2021, I earned a certificate in grantwriting from Seattle Central Community College in partnership with Spark the Fire Grantwriting.
